Lauren Bittner Photos photographed in downtown Los Angeles, California on October 22, 2005 by Terrance Gold article | interview transcript
I love photographing subjects in interesting areas. As such, I try to avoid shooting in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood as much as possible. When I can't get out of those locations, I tend to shoot people in alleys. Alleys have significantly more grit and charm than most street front locations. I agreed to meet and shoot actress Lauren Bittner in downtown Los Angeles, a locale I had never previously worked with. The results were exceptional. I particularly liked the look of the ad on the side of the Hotel Figeroa building that is just across the street from the Staples Center. Interestingly, the photos of Bittner sitting on the pavement were taken on a narrow walkway between two buildings. The space was no wider than 15 feet. Both buildings were covered in ivy and, to the naked eye, it looked at though we should have been able to do something creative with the location; I mentioned in passing to Bittner that I couldn't come up with anything to do in the walkway and she wanted the opportunity to see if she could make it work. This was the best we could do.
