During the late '70's and early '80's, low-brow teenage comedy was the 'in' thing, with films like Porky's and Meatballs striking box office pay dirt. Some twenty years later, a completely new generation of horny teenagers is lining up to spend their hard earned allowance watching the Weitz brothers' (Antz) directorial debut, American Pie.
The sleeper hit of last summer, American Pie focuses on the lives of four high school seniors Ostreicher, Kevin, Jim and Finch (Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Jason Biggs and Eddie Kaye Thomas) who, instead of worrying about AP test results and which colleges they will attend, are completely preoccupied with the notion of losing their virginity by the time they graduate. Anything but subtle, American Pie offers the viewer a wide variety of humorous characters and situations, with Jim's awkward sexual orientation and initiation leading the way. A tad closer to There's Something About Mary than Shakespeare in Love, this was fun.
