Bitch, please, this just ain't a good movie. American Pimp, the latest film from the Hughes Brothers (Dead Presidents, Menace II Society), is a supposedly gritty documentary about the lives of pimps across the United States. For a documentary, American Pimp is surprisingly catchy and fast-paced. The lifestyle the film examines though is completely superfluous--never once was there a definitively rational answer given to the question "Why does a ho need a pimp?"--and shockingly similar to all the stereotypes one is used to seeing in 70's blaxploitation films like The Mack or even in Keenan Ivory Wayans' 1987 spoof, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. Hearing the pimps talk about their bitches is occasionally laughable, but this movie was simply not interesting.
