Starring Robert DeNiro, Billy Crystal, et al. Released to DVD on August 17, 1999.
No matter what the situation, it is always amusing to see serious actors making light of their other serious performances. This was particularly the case in Harold Ramis' comedy, Analyze This, as Robert DeNiro, renowned for his realistic and brutal portrayals of men involved in organized crime, delivered a comically understated performance that captured the essence of this film. DeNiro stars as New York mob boss, Paul Vitti. Vitti, feeling the strain of leading a family of good fellas, begins to see a psychiatrist, Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal). Sobel isn't exactly happy about the idea of counseling Vitti, but with several large men wearing sport coats and turtlenecks standing behind him, Vitti convinces Sobel that it would be in his best interests to continue on with sessions. Unlike Jim Abrahams' Mafia! the comedy in Analyze This is more cerebral than scatological and the production is overflowing with talent, DeNiro, Crystal and Ramis being the three most obvious examples of that. The ending of this film does suffer from the need to do something--Animal House had the same problem--but this is easily overlooked. Ramis has rebounded nicely here from his 1996 debacle, Multiplicity.
