Between the entertainingly bad movies Deep Blue Sea and Lake Placid, I have become a fan of the reemerging "Big Animal Disaster" movie. And while Bats does contain big animals (two fruit bats that have been genetically altered to become bigger and badder with more of a taste for human blood) the end result of this film was quite poor, with the script an exercise in hack screenwriting. Lou Diamond Phillips stars as Emmett Kimsey a local, Texas sheriff who, with an incredibly good looking bat expert, Dr. Sheila Casper (Dina Meyer), has to kill the two bats before they cause more havoc in the neighborhood. Then the guano hits the fan. The acting by Phillips and Meyer is hardly Oscar worthy--there's a reason both actors are appearing opposite computer generated bats. Phillips has fallen a long way since Stand and Deliver.
