Deep Blue Sea isn't exactly the Oscar threat that, say, American Beauty is. What Deep Blue Sea is though, is an entertainingly bad movie. The plot of Deep Blue Sea would probably be best described as The Abyss... with sharks. After Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows) does some genetic experimentation on some mako sharks in an underwater lab, the sharks develop a taste for Hollywood actors and go after Thomas Jane, LL Cool J, Burrows, Samuel L. Jackson and others. The thrills and chills of Deep Blue Sea are, for the most part, lifted from other movies dealing with water, The Poseidon Adventure and Jaws being the two most notable, but this still can't detract from the overall impact of this film. Like Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break and Walter Hill's The Warriors, Deep Blue Sea is a good 'bad movie'; it makes you smile, laugh at times, and hold your breath in suspense. Dead in the water? Not hardly.
