The first hour of director David Fincher's Fight Club is one of the most off-beat, thought provoking and entertainingly different hours of film this side of Being John Malkovich.

In a chance meeting on a plane, the narrator (Edward Norton) meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). Over time the become roommates and friends, in that order, and come upon the idea of starting fight club, a club that enables men to fight in a controlled situation, releasing the endorphins that makes the experience life affirming and pleasant, split lips and bruised organs aside. Based on Chuck Palahniuk's book, this tale of unmotivated, corporate workers seeking meaning in their lives was initially fascinating, with the narrator attending testicular cancer support groups in order to feel emotion of any kind. However, as this film moved into its second hour, and fight club became a not-so-subtle metaphor for a number of different societal groups, this film took a turn for the worse. Fight Club wasn't bad, but could have been a lot better.
