With the exception of Penelope Spheeris' Wayne's World in 1992, none of the recent silver screen adaptations of "Saturday Night Live" (SNL) skits have done well financially or critically. However, as it stands, I was quite amused by the on-screen proceedings in John Fortenberry's A Night at the Roxbury. Will Ferrell and the most flexible actor in the business today, Chris Kattan, star as the two Butabi brothers; they are losers who like to club... you know this, you've seen the routine on "SNL". Add jobs, girlfriends, and Haddaway's "What Is Love" 983 times, and you've got the plot to this one. However, A Night at the Roxbury works for the same reason Wayne's World did: by combining a little slapstick humor with original characters and a few parodies of other popular movies, the end result was an easy going humor. There is no message, there is no attempt to right societal wrongs, just sheer Spam entertainment as we watch two stupid brothers interact with the public in their everyday lives.
