Starring Mel Gibson, Jason Isaacs, Heath Ledger, et al.
Mel Gibson stars as a South Carolina farmer, Benjamin Martin, living in the early 1770's who is single handedly looking after his 6 or 7 children since his wife passed on. The Martins world is happy... until the British redcoats come onto their land and start a big fight. After the delectably bad Colonel Tavington (Jason Isaacs) shoots Martin's 15-year old son in cold blood, Martin gets involved in the war, much to the chagrin of the entire British Empire. Throwing around ass-kickings like Pedro Martinez does fastballs, Martin and his eldest son (Heath Ledger) fight for freedom and the American way of life.
The action scenes in The Patriot are intense and well choreographed, with Emmerich handling the technical aspect of things in fine form. The acting though is rather poor in parts and the decision to place all of the evilness of the British army into Tavington's character is a questionable one. The Patriot is an event picture and a spectacle to behold, it's just not the best crafted film you'll have seen in recent months.
