Starring Mel Gibson, Gregg Henry, et al. Released to DVD on July 27, 1999.
Mel Gibson stars in Payback as Porter, a professional thief. After pulling a job worth $140,000 with his partner, Porter is literally shot in the back by his wife, who, unbeknownst to him, had been having an affair with his partner. Left for dead, Porter somehow manages to survive. After re-cooperating from his gunshot wounds, he strikes out after his wife and ex-partner, looking for his $70,000 cut of the heist. Things get a little more complicated -- and bloody -- when it turns out the mob is now in possession of the money. Written by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential) and Terry Hayes, and directed by Helgeland, Payback is one of the more simplistic films to have come out of Hollywood in years -- someone else has Porter's money, he wants it back. It's just that simple. Gibson brings a delicious charm to his outlaw lead; in the hands of a lesser actor, this film would have failed, as creating a believable -- and likeable -- lead was the most challenging element of this production.
