Writer/director Wes Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson redefined 'quirky' in their 1996 debut, Bottle Rocket. The boys secured a larger budget, bigger name stars--Bill Murray for one--and followed Bottle Rocket with one of the most heart-warming and good-natured films released during the '90's. Creating memorable and identifiable characters is not an easy feat, by any stretch of the imagination, and yet Anderson and Wilson have created a veritable diamond mine of such three dimensional characters in Rushmore. With the four main protagonists ranging in age from 12 to 50, the interchanges between generations are priceless and the scene where Murray encourages 17 year old newcomer Jason Schwartzman to drink one of the years best. Off beat and surprisingly tight for a film that doesn't have an easily defined plotline, Rushmore was enjoyable to perfection. This is one of the freshest and best American comedies to have been released in the last several years.
