In response to the United States' covert and somewhat illegal capture of an Arab militant leader who blew up a building he shouldn't have, several terrorists cells in New York City have begun to strike targets in Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. It is up to counter-terrorist agent, Anthony Hubbard (Denzel Washington), to end the insurgency and let Americans regain the feeling of safety in their own homes. Other films about terrorism have been made. Hell, other films about terrorism have been made starring Denzel Washington, but The Siege, written/produced/directed by Edward Zwick , transcends the other movies in the genre by creating a situation that raises some very interesting questions about what values we as Americans respect and maintain in our society. Zwick's direction is superb in The Siege, with numerous eye-pleasing camera set-ups and well shot scenes, particularly one involving the use of ringing cell-phones and beepers to alert the viewer to impending chaos. You have to be alert while watching this film, but that is as high a praise as one can bestow a film in the ë90's.
