When Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon) agrees to let his meddling sister-in-law (Illeana Douglas) hypnotize him at a party, the after-effects are quite large: Tom now has the ability to see dead people. In particular, Tom sees the ghost of a neighborhood girl, Samantha (Jenny Morrison), who disappeared some 6 months ago. However, Samanthaís ghost appears on a somewhat flexible schedule and that frustrates Tom. I suppose when being haunted by a spirit not of this world, punctuality and timeliness are two underrated traits. So he stops going to his job, repeating the actions that he had performed when he first saw Samanthaís ghost, much to the dismay of his wife (Kathryn Erbe). Outside of the very cliche ending, Stir of Echoes was one of the most defiantly different films to have been released in 2000. Never feeling the need to explain certain actions and delighting in creating the strange paranoid and emotional actions of Witzky, Koepp rebounded nicely here from The Trigger Effect debacle.
