With the resurgence of the 1970's in recent American pop culture and the critical and box office success of films set during the 1970's (think Boogie Nights, Almost Famous, Dazed and Confused and The Virgin Suicides), is it any surprise that a score of other films vaguely resembling the aforementioned four are popping up in theatres with an increasing frequency? The answer, of course, is no. Sunset Strip--named after the Los Angeles Boulevard of the same name--is the latest of these to hit the streets. Unlike some of the other knock-offs though, Sunset Strip is actually an interesting portrait of the time. Granted, its plot is an amalgamation of Dazed and Confused and Boogie Nights--one day in the life of six people who sleep around with each other in variety of different trianglings and unique places--but the strong characters pull Sunset Strip onto its own ground. And, as a whole, the acting is good from the mostly no name cast. Jared Leto seemed to be trying to invoke the spirit and Texas drawl of Dazed and Confused's Wooderson (Matthew McCaughnahey) in his extended cameo as Glenn, a long haired guitar player, but with so little screen time, Leto's poor performance didn't have too much of an impact on the film itself. If nothing else, Sunset Strip should be seen to hear Adam Goldberg deliver the line, "Hey, we're just two dudes here, taking a leak." Screenwriting like that doesn't come along everyday.
