Written and directed by Carlos Saura, Tango is one of the most beautifully shot films to have been released during the '90's. Working closely with his cinematographer, Vittorio Storaro, who worked with director Bernardo Bertolucci to capture an Academy Award in 1987 for The Last Emperor, Saura has created a visual feast of colors, themes and scenes in Tango. Miguel Angel Sola stars as an Argentinian director whose wife has recently left him. Nursing his broken heart, Sola throws himself into the production of a movie focusing on the tango. A wrench is thrown into the mix when Sola falls for his leading lady, the mistress of the man financially backing the film. Saura's tongue-in-cheek script is solid, though, upon reflection one barely remembers the screenplay, favoring instead, the memories of the wondrous lighting schemes and the spectacular use of filters and camera setups. This isn't so much an art film as it is a true work of art.
