Fernando Meirelles
The Constant Gardner, City of Godarticle | transcript

Hotel rooms are incredibly hard to shoot in. Not so much logistically or practically, but creatively. The rooms are supposed to be patently sterile... which makes a photographer's job that much harder. If I have an actor standing in front of two scantily clad models who are twenty feet tall, it's a little bit easier to instill a photo with energy and verve than if I'm looking at a guy on a couch. Fernando Meirelles hadn't had a lot of photos taken of himself and, as such, was slightly nervous throughout our shoot. This was evident in the early photos I took, but as Meirelles realized that he didn't have to do anything special while I was shooting, he got a little bit more comfortable. There is an electricity to this picture that I love (and can't really explain). I do love the little drops of rain on the window. The Constant Gardener's director Fernando Meirelles poses for Terrance Gold.
