Gwen (Sandra Bullock) is a woman with a serious drinking problem. Arriving at her sister's wedding bombed out of her mind, Gwen falls into the wedding cake and then borrows the newlyweds' limousine, crashing the car into a house to end her joyride. This lands her in rehab for the titular 28 days. In rehab, Gwen meets a wacky assortment of other alcoholics and drug abusers who help her to overcome her problem. Written by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and directed with a deft touch by Betty Thomas (The Brady Bunch Movie), 28 Days surprisingly overcame the Patch Adams-esque tone of the material, taking viewers into the intimate and apparently vomit filled world of rehabilitation. Paling in comparison to the pull-no-punches examinations of alcoholism like The Lost Weekend or Leaving Las Vegas, 28 Days was, nonetheless, an intriguing look behind closed doors.
