Starring Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, et al. Released to DVD on April 6, 1999.
Edward Norton stars in Tony Kaye's 1998 film, American History X, as Derek, a reformed skinhead who has just been paroled for killing several black men. Now out of jail, Derek can see that his brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), is headed down the same path of intolerance that he himself was traveling down before being sent to prison and begins to take measures to ensure that history X doesn't repeat itself in Danny. Nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in this film, Norton positively shines in his portrayal of Derek. His emotions are raw and exhilarating, and his heart is on his sleeve. However, there is a counterbalance to Norton's performance in the form of Kaye's lackadaisical style of direction. Kaye shot both in b/w and color, instead of adapting a more coherent script, to allow the audience to know what was a flashback (b/w), and what is happening during the present (color). The story of one man's redemption and his attempt to help others not make the same mistakes as he did is strong.
