Starring John Travolta, Robert Duvall, et al. Released to DVD on July 13, 1999.
Adapted from the best-selling book of the same name, A Civil Action follows, from beginning to end, the events surrounding a law suit in Massachusetts, filed by Jan Schlichtmann (John Travolta). In Hollywood terms though, this film was a story about one lawyerís conquest to discover his humanity and learn what moral obligations he has to mankind. The acting here, by Travolta, Tony Shalhoub and William H. Macy, was passable, with Travolta eons away from his performance in Pulp Fiction, but this was more a fault of writer/director Steve Zaillainís script than of the actors themselves. Based off of a true story, Zaillian put a far greater emphasis on the courtroom action than on the character development in A Civil Action; this kept me interested, but interested in the same way I watch an intriguing documentary on The Learning Channel. It would be quite a stretch to consider this film to be a legal thriller like The Firm or The Pelican Brief.
