Home Improvement is one of my least favorite sit-coms. The reason for this can be found in the producers' repeated efforts to have studio audiences and laugh tracks applauding and cheering for the so-called "accomplishments" of the fictional characters on set. This bothers me more so than anything else on TV; when people in reality are expected to be happy and proud of the success of the fictional creations of professional screenwriters. For the most part, save for several supposedly inspirational films, this trend has been absent from Hollywood productions. Until now. Coyote Ugly is the story of the shy and warm-hearted "Jersey" (Piper Perabo), a country girl who moves to New York City in high hopes of becoming the next Jewel. After overcoming several token obstacles, Jersey becomes the next Jewel and everyone is proud of her because (cue violin music) through hard work and determination, she showed that everyone can realize their dreams and earn millions of dollars. This false concept plays off of Americans' desire to believe in the American dream and is, when recognized, a very cheap gimmick to milk money and emotions from audiences. The selling points of this film came at the titular bar, Coyote Ugly, where Jersey finds work while still struggling, where a variety of scantily clad supermodels work hawking liquor. Marketed to males as a T&A showcase and to females as an empowering film, Coyote Ugly is neither. A PG-13 rated mess, even the most gullible women should be able to see through the thin attempt at Grrl Power here. Sadly the financial success of this film will promote a slew of imitators to come.
