The one unifying thread in Hollywood's production is commercialism. If a movie is too smart, acerbic or dark for mainstream audiences, the chances are you won't see it being released by a major studio simply because the marketing research has shown that incredibly smart, acerbic or dark movies don't make money... which explains why you haven't heard of this small but fascinating Canadian production, Cube. Slow but surely though, Cube is making a name for itself in the home video market.. The simple Twilight Zone-ish plot of Cube focuses on 6 different individuals who find themselves in the midst of what could best be described as giant Rubik's Cube with rooms that are constantly rearranging. No facts are given; all the people know is that the eerie, primary color tinted rooms in the cube appear to be randomly booby trapped, making the search for an exit that much more difficult. Stimulating with just the right touch of creepiness, Cube is a hidden gem.
