Director Shohei Imamura's latest project focuses on, you guessed it, Dr. Akagi, the local doctor for a small island in Japan. Akagi, nick-named Dr. Liver because of his penchant for finding liver related illnesses in his patients, runs from house call to house call, helping people who have come down with hepatitis. Akagi and his assistants do what they can in pre-Hiroshima Japan to find a cure for the disease. Not exactly filled with exciting scenes and pacing like The Mummy, Dr. Akagi suffers from the lack of a real plot structure and Imamura and Daisuke Tengan's rather wandering script.
