Sorting out the good teen flicks from the bad and the ugly is almost an effort in futility given the studios prolific release schedules. Get Real distances itself from the rest of the pack because the teens involved here are British and they're gay. Steven Carter (Ben Silverstone) is a rather nerdy student at his prep school. He has one friend, Linda (Charlotte Brittain), his next door neighbor and has only recently come to acceptance with the fact that he is gay. Both Steven and Linda have a crush on John Dixon (Brad Gorton) the most popular boy in school. Things get decidedly more interesting when Steven learns that John is also trying to come to grip with his homosexuality. Director Simon Shore got very good performances from both Silverstone and Gorton, and had a wonderfully poignant script by Patrick Wilde off of which to work. The unexpected nature of Get Real and the surprisingly upbeat resolution were genuinely heart warming to see.
