When you think about it, the story and the idea behind the invisible man are rather perverse and voyeuristic. Given the opportunity to essentially do whatever you could think of, without being caught, the human mind instantly gravitates toward the seamier and more risqué activities in which one could indulge. Given this provocative subject matter, it seems perfect that the director attached to Hollow Man is the renowned master of the seamy, provocative and risqué, Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct and Show Girls). Kevin Bacon stars as the cocksure Dr. Sebastian Caine. Caine and his fellow researchers (Elizabeth Shue and Josh Brolin among others) have made several strategic breakthroughs in the field of invisibility. Successfully turning a gorilla invisible and bringing her back to normal, Caine decides the next step is to test the procedure on a human… namely himself. Against the better judgement of his co-workers, government beneficiaries and his own rational mind, Caine injects himself with the serum that will turn him invisible and, soon after, learns that the antidote to return him to normal doesn't work as it is supposed to. And the scene is thusly set for Caine's chilling descent into madness. Consciously plying to the voyeuristic thrill the audiences would receive from watching this film, Verhoeven has created an undeniably dirty and pleasurable film to view in Hollow Man.
