I could never understand how actress Kim Basinger won, or was even nominated for an Oscar for her work in L.A. Confidential. At first I thought it was a joke, like Carrie being named the prom queen, but the Hollywood community genuinely seemed to support Basinger, a woman so out-of-it that her high school teachers thought she might have been autistic. Regardless of how she got her Oscar, Basinger is back at work here in I Dreamed of Africa doing her best to dispel the notion that she could ever resemble a talented actress in this woeful, supposed adventure film about an Italian woman relocating to the dark continent. Possibly written and filmed by a travel agency, this film did its best to show the natural elegance of Africa, complete with herds of elephants and rhinos galore, it just didn't seem obvious exactly what Basinger's role was in the overall picture. It was honestly painful to watch African extras stealing scenes from this cast.
