I don't know if I could have handled growing up with roughly 45 brothers and sisters, but I'll tell you this, judging from the comedy in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka and Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, the Wayans' must have had a pretty good time doing so. I'm Gonna Git You Sucka is a parody of the '70's blaxploitation films that starred a) retired football stars, and/or b) Pam Grier, that had one or more of the words 'dope', 'fly', or 'badassssss' in the title. Written and directed by In Living Color front man, Keenen Ivory Wayans, the humor in this film works surprisingly well, because, like the first two Naked Gun movies, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka is a spoof set firmly within the regular context of a blaxploitation pictures. Keenen himself stars as Jack Spade, a U.S. soldier honorably discharged from the army, who comes home to find that his brother, Junebug, has died from wearing too much gold--a condition the police refer to as "O.G.ing". Jack, beside himself about his brothers death, vows revenge on the leader of the cartel that was supplying Junebug with his gold, a man aptly named Mr. Big. Enlisting the help of former ace crime-fighter John Slade, played with a calm swagger by Bernie Casey, Jack aims to clean up his part of the city, known to its inhabitants as the Anyghetto section of town. As the film progresses, Jack begins to learn the tricks to being a studly, black vigilante, who can get all the ladies. He gets his own theme music, realizes ordering a "Pepsi double" doesn't quite cut it next to a "whiskey double", and even survives being wounded in battle, after someone unthoughtfully stepped on his bunion. I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, like the Farrelly brothers films, is a very tangential movie, drifting here and there to incorporate whatever humorous ideas Keenen thought might work. Occasionally the bits don't work, but more often than not, Keenen scores with a marvelously creative pieces including the Inner City Games, which features athletic events that have youths stripping down cars and mugging senior citizens, and an unexpected biography of Abraham Lincoln as written by a blonde haired, blue eyed, child of a radical black leader that begins with the statement, Abraham Lincoln was born "poor white trash". The supporting cast is quite strong, featuring Jim Brown, Isaac Hayes and several other blaxploitation stars of the '60's and '70's who are cast in comically, self-deprecating roles, and usual Wayans crew consisting of David Alan Grier, Kadeem Hardison, and scores of other Wayans family members. Despite the fact that both films are genuinely entertaining, the slightly dated nature of the material spoofed I'm Gonna Git You Sucka places it behind Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. See that one, I'll be damned if I'm going to write that title again in this review.
