Starring Matthew Broderick, Rupert Everett, et al. Released to DVD on December 7, 1999. Like most of the recent Disney summer films, Inspector Gadget was more interested in attracting the dollars of parents looking to take their six-year-olds to the movies than anything else. Thus, the nature of this film came, not with its characters and plot, but, rather, with keeping the on-screen material saccharine and squarely within the confines of a PG rating. And Inspector Gadget does just this. Matthew Broderick stars as Inspector Gadget, a prototype police officer with an equal amount of human and robotic parts that allow Gadget the use of numerous gadgets--roller skates, parachutes, cigarette lighters--built into his body. There were several nifty sight gags--yes, I just used the word nifty--and one or two funny scenes, but this film won't be interesting to anyone over the age of eleven.
