Too often, American filmmakers get caught up into believing that the American romantic ideal is the ONLY way to write love stories. Fortunately for movie goers there are a fair number of foreign filmmakers who are adept at creating love stories that don't immediately conform to that American ideal. The story line of Juan Medem's Lovers of the Arctic Circle follows a 17-year journey through the lives of Otto (Fele Martinez) and Ana (Najwa Nimri). Meeting first as children, their budding relationship takes a turn for the taboo when Otto's single father and Ana's single mother decide to get married. Not letting this slight societal obstacle stand in their way, Otto and Ana continue with their clandestine relationship. However, when Otto's biological mother passes away, he feels the brunt of the blame surrounding her death and begins to travel the world in an aimless pattern. Then fate intervenes. Medem's script is complex and smooth, and his command of this material is firm. Lovers of the Arctic Circle was a most interesting diversion from the standard romance.
