Starring Jim Carrey, Renee Zellweger, et al. Released to DVD on January 9, 2001.
The Farrelly brothers have had such success in Hollywood with their first three films Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin and There's Something About Mary, that a movie like Me, Myself and Irene that is funny, but decidedly below the talent level of their other works, feels like a complete and utter disappointment. The majority of the bad karma surrounding this project comes with one element: heightened expectations. With Jim Carrey reuniting with the Farrellys in a story about a schizophrenic cop, Charlie (Carrey), both of whose personalities fall in love with the same woman, Irene (Renee Zellweger) you can't help but expect greatness. And this is where Me, Myself and Irene falls apart. The story behind the gags in this movie is, by far, the worst plot in a Farrelly brothers movie yet. Involving gun fights, detectives and murderous bad guy intent on getting his hands on Irene, the feel of this material is that of a second rate action movie. And this is almost the opposite of the Farrelly's intent. There are several scenes that are hysterically funny, but sadly most of these are grouped together in the first twenty minutes of the movie. If nothing else, think of it in this way: this was a Farrelly brothers movie starring Jim Carrey that didn't gross $100 million.
