Showtime and HBO have put a new wrinkle into the direct-to-video market: they've made it a whole hell of a lot better. It used to be the case that filmmakers who couldn't get studio funding for their projects were out of luck. Now, producers can turn to the premium cable channels for moneys and backing as well. Produced for Showtime, director Tim Hunter's Mean Streak is a great example of this type of film; entertaining and captivating, this film was, if nothing lese, an enjoyable way to spend two hours. Scott Bakula stars in Mean Streak as a hardened and rather racist New York City detective who is teamed, against his wishes, with an African American FBI agent (Leon) to track down a hate monger who has been sending racial death threats to the Hispanic baseball player who is on the verge of breaking Joe DiMaggio's famed 56 game hitting streak. Intelligent and probing in nature, Mean Streak's originality far overcame its lower budget production values.
