Director Mike Figgis is pretty much a hit or miss guy. When he nails something like Leaving Las Vegas or Timecode, he does so in a big fashion. On the other hand, when Figgis over estimates the power of a certain script or just writes a poor screenplay like One Night Stand or Miss Julie, he does so in an even bigger fashion. This is the story of a turn-of-the-century, rich, young woman (Saffron Burrows) and her conversation one night with her middle aged, lower class footman (Peter Mullan). They talk, they laugh, they cry, they kiss and they will bore the hell out of you. Figgis' technical expertise is prominent, but this can't camouflage the fact that this is the most languishing cinematic experience of the year.
