Writer/director Lawrence Kasdan's Mumford seems to be a nod toward Sherwood Anderson's novel Winesburg, Ohio. When a new psychiatrist named Mumford (Loren Dean) moves to the town of Mumford, people line up at his door to partake in his somewhat unorthodox therapy. Trouble ensues for Mumford the man and Mumford the town when the fair doctor falls in love with one of his more comely patients, Sofie Crisp (Hope Davis). Kasdan's film was quite an unusual change of pace for me, with the plot of this movie focused squarely on the feelings and emotions of the main characters, an idea that is completely the opposite of A) people trying to kill each other or B) a bus driving around that can't go under 50 miles per hour. New comer Dean performs masterfully as Mumford and Jason Lee delivers a far softer and more likable performance than in any of his turns in Kevin Smith's films. Devoid of any big explosions or out-of-control public transportation vehicles, Mumford was a lovely, lazy walk through the park on a summer's day.
