Tiring of the standard romantic comedies he was used to directing like Runaway Bride and Pretty Woman, Garry Marshall took on The Other Sister, a story focusing on the romance between two mentally-challenged twenty somethings in the form of Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi. When Daniel (Ribisi) and Angie (Lewis) meet the sparks fly, much to the consternation of Angie's extraordinarily overbearing mother (Diane Keaton). The romantic scenario is cute and the chemistry between Lewis and Ribisi good, but both leads suffer from writers Marshall and Bob Brunner's choices to make mental retardation the extent of their character development.
