For years, people have been making fun of the Polish for being stupid, and, consequently, for years, champions of social equality and justice have lobbied to remove the ethnicity from jokes like the following: How did the Nazis invade Poland? They walked in backward and said they were leaving. Then came Polish Wedding, one of the stupidest most pointless character studies to have been released in eons and we're back to square one. When Hala (Claire Danes) learns she's pregnant, she gets dressed in a white wedding dress and goes to confront the father, just like her mother before her, and her mother before her--ain't tradition grand? There is a sub-plot involving Hala's father (Gabriel Byrne) and her mother (Lena Olin) who insists upon cheating on him. Initially off-beat, Polish Wedding quickly became just plain unusual and languid. I find it amazing that this script was ever actually produced.
