During its theatrical release, Random Hearts was positively trashed by critics, namely because it wasn't the typical Harrison Ford vehicle. However, reducing a film down to this level effectively removes the audience's attention from the most intriguing nature of Ford's character in Random Hearts. Dutch Vanden Berg (Ford) is a Washington D.C. cop who, in the span of a day, learns that his wife has died in a plane crash and, then, that his wife was on the plane because she was flying away for the weekend with her lover. Dropped with these two bombshells, Vanden Berg determinedly begins research his wife's affair and life, trying to find out what the last words of truth his wife had spoken to him. The problems in Random Hearts arise as tangents in Vanden Berg's journey toward truth, with a very tacked on romance with Kristen Scott-Thomas. Ford doesn't seem comfortable with his romantic lead here, but performs admirably in his scenes as the still-in-shock husband.
