Given the alarming mediocrity of the first Shark Attack and the fact that it starred actor Casper Van Dien, it came as quite a surprise to learn that there was a sequel in the making. Based on the same idiotic idea as the original, Shark Attack 2 was missing the star power of both Ernie Hudson and Van Dien, who was last seen in Python, badly attempting to play a character with a southern accent and a master's degree. Therefore, it came as even a greater surprise to learn that Shark Attack 2 was far more entertaining than the original and--dare I say--even enjoyable. The setting is South Africa; the problem is that great white sharks are starting to a) form packs and b) chow down on hot twenty-year old women scuba diving in the area. When Dr. Nick Harris (Thorsten Kaye) manages to capture a great white, he takes a blood sample and learns that some unwitting scientist has made the sharks stronger, faster, hungrier and able to roar like lions before attacking (courtesy of the sound mixers). Humming with a fast paced rhythm, Shark Attack 2 alternates between the sharks' attacks and the attempts of Harris and his new Crocodile Hunter-esque nemesis/sidekick, Roy Bishop (Daniel Alexander) to kill the new breed of great whites. Filled with all the prerequisites of a big animal disaster movie, including stupid mayors and an untimely upcoming event (in this case a surfing competition), Shark Attack 2 is about as good a B-movie as you will find.
