While they were indeed funny movies, sadly The Naked Gun trilogy is all anyone thinks of anymore when the term 'parody' is mentioned. Since the advent of the ZAZ spoofs in the late '70's (specifically those movies featuring Leslie Nielsen), the more high-brow comedy has fallen through the cracks, in favor of more and louder fart jokes. Returning to the more academic comedic platform is Stiff Upper Lips, director Gary Sinyor's humorous take on the Merchant/Ivory drama. Georgina Cates, Phoebe's younger sister, stars here as Emily Ivory, a 22 year old virgin who falls in love with George (Sean Pertwee, the son of the third Doctor Who, Jon Pertwee), a peasant who has recently saved her from drowning. Hired by Emily's Aunt Agnes (Prunella Scales) as a servant, George travels with Emily, her Aunt Agnes, her brother, Edward, and Edward's college friend Cedric, on vacation to Italy and India. A movie that actually gets better and funnier as it progresses, Stiff Upper Lips has succeeded wonderfully in its attempt to lampoon the British period drama.
