Most of the recent released that focus on the triumph of the human spirit are hardly provocative or enjoyable; screenwriters and directors are often more interested in filling their on-screen action with as much melodrama and sappiness as possible, instead of just allowing the story to unfold itself. The brilliance in auteur director David Lynch's The Straight Story is that Lynch lets his material speak for itself, there is no need for violin music. Based on a true story, Academy Award nominee Richard Farnsworth stars in The Straight Story as Alvin Straight, a retired, 86 year old farmer who embarks on a 300 mile trip from Iowa to Wisconsin aboard his John Deere lawnmower after learning his brother has suffered from a stoke. Playing it strangely wholesome and warm, Lynch, the man who delighted by putting a human ear in a cornfield, helms one of the most caring, charming and positive looks at current American society in a long time. The complete opposite of American Beauty, The Straight Story was miraculous.
