Waking the Dead, is as haunting, stirring and thought-provoking a piece of filmmaking as any I've had the pleasure of screening in the six months. Billy Crudup plays Fielding Pierce, an ambitious young politician with his sights aimed squarely on a seat in Congress in the upcoming 1982 election. As Fielding begins campaigning for the democratic nomination, he is shaken by the reappearing images of his dead college sweetheart, Sarah Williams (Jennifer Connelly). Told through a series of flashbacks that enable the viewer to understand the dynamics of Fielding and Sarah's relationship, Waking the Dead is the rare film that focuses the camera on an astoundingly complex and generally healthy relationship between two consenting adults. With Robert Dillon's screenplay (adapted from Scott Spencer's novel) questioning whether we retain the idealism and viewpoints we had in our youth--a favorite topic of mine--Waking the Dead was vaguely reminiscent of director Phillip Saville's stellar 1999 film, Metroland. And like Metroland last year, Waking the Dead is one 10 best movies of the year.
