If the premise behind Wirey Spindell seems eerily familiar--a man in his 30's, on the verge of commitment, reflecting on his previous loves--it's because this is also the premise behind High Fidelity. The similarities between the two films, however, stop there. Writer, director and star, Eric Schaefer plays the title neurotic New Yorker, a fellow who can't make love to any woman he's truly in love with. So Wirey and his fiancée, Tabitha (Callie Thorne), haven't had sex in months. This fact irritates Tabitha and makes Wirey even more neurotic than normal. Thus begin the flashbacks to all of his previous girlfriends. Schaeffer is both a poor writer and an annoying actor. Every time he appears on screen, you can be guaranteed of another five-minute rant about nothing in particular that goes nowhere quickly and generally wastes everyone's time. I'm sure there are Eric Schaeffer fans out there, and both of you will probably love this movie. Unless you're looking for a reason to hate independent films, saner minds should avoid this.
