There is an interesting self-fulfilling prophecy at work in California. Studios make an effort to produce truly glamorous movies, movies that in turn cause people to attempt to get involved in that glittering lifestyle they see on screen. So the people move to Hollywood, and the studios begin making movies about the people moving to L.A. to be in the movies... causing even more people to move to Hollywood and even more movies to be made about this new group of would-be actors. With Friends Like These is one of these movies. Not anywhere near as biting as The Player, With Friends Like These follows a group of four, middle aged, and mediocre actor friends as they compete for the role of Al Capone in Martin Scorsese's latest picture. Reminiscent of Very Bad Things in terms of being a comedy without laughs, With Friends Like These has attitude and originality, but somehow manages to waste these qualities entirely.
